Hi all,

I'm wanting to replace the old Honda 10hp and wonder if anyone can tell me if I can get away with something less...Like perhaps a 6hp. I don't know the math on hull speed for the Vega but less is always more to my way of thinking. I plan to go offshore but not for some years yet so for now it's the Fraser River and out through the gulf islands.

I will of course plan my trips around favorable tides and currents.

Also wonder about outboards with generators if I do need to go with the 9.9

Thanks,

Stephen

Stephen,
Check this out : Four stroke, 55 pound, 6hp, 25 inch shaft, plus it includes an 5amp alt- under $1500. But wait theres more - free shipping -
I think it would do the job.

Stephen,
I had a six hp on a 24 footer and it was not always adequate. It's nice to have more power to get out of an emergency situation, especially with all the currents in our area.

I think your best bet would be a Yamaha 9.9 Long Shaft High Thrust. (I stumbled across this interesting article:)

I had one on a Lancer 25 and it was the perfect match: quiet, powerful, and economical to run. Also, it was nice having electric start and an alternator for battery charging.

My long term preference would be for a new one, but I realize that's not always possible.

I think the newer ones have a fresh water flushing hookup built in. One piece of advice from an outboard mechanic I bought a used motor from: "Flush with fresh water after every use and I'll never see you again!"
