You might consider Tohatsu 9.9, electric start, 25" ultra long shaft... or a 6 hp equivalent... :>

Don't forget the heavy duty bracket. By the time you're done, you'll have $2600-3000+ in the installation, depending on whether you want remote controls in the cockpit. Just remember, an outboard will come out of the water in a chop. If you must, then I concur on the Tohatsu suggestion. If i were looking at that kind of $, I'd consider a Yanmar 1GM-type replacement or Beta Marine.

First familiarize yourself with the diesel engine. The problem with Renaults is the parts availability but they are quite reliable when they are running. A sailboat is the best hybrid as if the engine dies you still have sail power. Worst case scenario drop your anchor and raise a black ball marker. Diesekl engines are very simple and that makes them reliable. The mostly rely on compression and clean fuel. Replace the impeller in the cooling system, replace the fuel filter, clean the water separator and have a charged battery and good connections for the starter and if the engine starts propmptly chances are it will reliable run. No spark plugs, DCI ignitions to foul up. If the engine was dead then you could repower but it does not make sense to add an outboard on top of a working diesel engine. Do get unlimited tow coverage for around $110 a year for those unfortunate incidents.

The Renault is reliable...

...but parts are difficult if not impossible to get. If the cone in the transmission goes it's pretty much time for a new engine.
The Renault in my '80 had major issues and was inoperable when I purchased the boat. Although it now runs, I don't trust it. We had a old Honda 8 HP long shaft on the boat which powered the boat just fine. This year we upgraded to a new 9.9 HP Honda. The Renault is currently for emergency use only.
The transom is pretty strong on these boats but you still want to reinforce with a backing plate. Our mount is on the starboard side instead of the middle since I didn't want to impede operation of the ladder. Also it puts the outboard tiller close to the center. Make sure you have the correct prop for a sailboat and an extra long shaft. Also don't skimp on the motor mount, I would suggest getting a model with a lot of vertical travel.

thanks everyone. I bought a 6hp toh.extralong and have been using it on a rhodes22 which is for sale..so since I don"t have to by one I'll us it as aux. The renault was used to bring boat up coast of NJ last oct. and ran without a hitch I was told. Then winterized. seller hired a"captain" who got motor runing without manual or much hunter know how. I should be able too...is manual available?....also some water gets in bildge when boat rocks side to side in swell..common? or potential big problem?...seems to be coming from below water line but not keel boats..am on the case....cheers frank
