I have an older Envinrude ouboard, and the throttle does not stay in position, requiring you to keep your hand on the throttle when in use which is very difficult. The throttle is gear drive, and I can't seem to find a way to adjust the tension. The guy I bought the motor from said there was a throttle tension adjustment, but I can't find it, any ideas?-

year, HP and model #

Get us the model #, year, horse power. I have a manual for these motors. I suspect the throttle lever is bent. As I recall most of these had an indent rail and a bump on the lever. Your model may be different so I'll look it up if you like. Steve P. ps, I'll be out of the country for a week starting Friday 23rd.

knob?

The motors I'm familiar with have a knob you tighten to hold the throttle position. You might have one under the handle?

Knob on end

My Johnson (outboard, that is) has a tension adjustment knob on the end of the throttle/steering lever.

More details

teh motor is a 9.9 hp Evinrude from 1977. I think the original grip is missing and somebody added a generic metal grip that accepts a tiller extension. I could not find anything in the handle or inside the moter that I could adjust, is it possible that was in the original grip assembly?

Anything's possible

You might be able to drill and tap your metal handle and get a set knob from Ace hardware. The threaded shaft on the knob just presses against the throttle drive shaft.

I hope so

Guys, if his motor is a little older they used to have a lever exiting from the cowling. This lever actually moved the magneto directly to advance the spark and hence the rpm's. If so, the adjustment screw is most likely under the cowling. Steve P.
