We have a 1986 222, and with a Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke outboard (longshaft). This motor has a 1.5 liter tank mounted on the engine. In order to get from our mooring out into the "wide open spaces" of Pleasant Bay, we have to negotiate over a mile of fairly narrow channel, densely populated with inconsiderate power boat types going 30mph. We also haven't done much sailing for the past 15 years, so feel more comfortable (at least for now) motoring through this area. I know that the motor is kind of underpowered for our boat, and in order to ensure that we have enough gas for the round trip, we have had to fill the tank with every trip. We are considering purchasing an external 6 gallon tank for the motor, so we don't have to refuel every time we sail. The boat has a vented compartment under the starboard seat in the cockpit that looks like it was intended to accept a fuel tank. Our question is: How do you get the fuel line to the motor? I'm a little nervous about having the line exit the compartment through the vented area (at the bottom of the compartment along the cockpit floor) and then just run over the transom to the engine ... I'm concerned that the line would be vulnerable to damage from people's feet, and that the line over the transom could get caught on the tiller, mainsheet, etc. How have other people run a fuel line from a such a compartment? Do we need to install a through-hull fitting for the fuel line, or is there some way to secure the line without drilling a hole in the boat?TIA!Jill
