nissan 5 hp 2 stroke

Hello, My boat came with a 1994 Nissan 5 HP 2 stroke. It is small, light, efficient, powerful, and easy to use. It starts on the first pull when warm, second pull when cold. It moves the boat well. I don't have a knotmeter, so I don't know how fast is goes, but fast enough. Barry

Nissan Caution

My experience with my Nissan 2.5 on a dingy is not very good. The tell-tale port (where cooling water squirts out) must be reamed out continuously or the engine will overheat. It's been a quirk since day one. The real problem is that I bought this motor from BoatUS. They do a fine job of selling but can't help when it comes to service. In fact, there are no authorized service dealers in the entire metropolitan area (Baltimore, MD.) And regular outboard service mechanics I've contacted in the area don't want to work on this brand. So my advice is to make sure someone local can service the engine before you buy it.

Tohatsu

I have had a 5 horse Tohatsu (they make the Nissan OBs) for eleven years. I dry store it in my garage when not in use. I have numerous hours on it, without a single problem, but I maintain it religiously. The Nissan should be a great motor if you maintain it and run it frequently and flush it EVERY TIME YOU USE IT with fresh water. I agree with the other post, in that you would want to have local service available in the rare event that work is needed.

Nissan 5hp

Yeah, I've got the same motor as Barry. I've had mininmal problems with it. I have had to take off the carbeurator once or twice and clean it out, but that is easy to do. Mine usually cranks on the first pull. I've never really gunned the motor, but it easily pushes the boat at 4-5 knots. Good luck!
