outboard steering

I currently have a 86 Mac 25 with a yamaha 9.9 hp that is in a fixed position (no tiller steering). The motor controls are in the boat and the cables are such that the steering has been done away with because of interferance with the control cables. The boat is rudder only and this doesnt look very appealling to me.....does anybody have any expirience with these cables and could this be overcome. If so, has anyone had any success hooking the rudder to the tiller? how can this be done without excess "monkey motion"? phots would be great!thanks all!

Outboard Control vs. rudder

We have a 1985 M25 with a 9.9 Yamaha. The Yamaha throttle/shift/stop controls are flex-cabled to the cockpit. The Yamaha has a 'centering bracket' with a lever that allows you to lock the motor in one position (straight forward, somewhat adjustable) or, release it so you can steer with the motor tiller. When you're motoring in open waters, lock the Yamaha straight ahead and steer with the boat tiller. When you're tweaking-it close to a dock or raftup, release the lock and steer with the Yamaha tiller.Definitely keep BOTH systems operational, each one has a function.

Thanks for the info Don, I need to add that the tiller (on the outboard) and fwd/rev lever is absent/or was removed by the previous owner. An added complication is that the remote controls for the outboard are mounted on the starbooard side of the cockpit as far from the motor as you can get!
