What hp outboard is best for a Hunter 25? Is 10 hp enough? It will sometimes have to battle a string current

motor for h25

My experience with a 9.9 two stroke on the h25 is that the motor has more than adequet power to reach hull speed evev against strong current. Regards Jim

Roy, I would choose a 15hp.

I have a 9.9 on my 25'. Its ok for most of the time but if you are motoring through jetties or a narrow pass then you want a 15hp. The 15 hp is the same weight as a 9.9. I know several 25' owners in my area that have gone from 9.9 to 15hp and they are glad they have. Should my Honda 9.9 die (not chance) then I definitely would get a 15 hp. Ted

9.9 Power Stroke it .....

I agree with the guys below. I bought the Honda 9.9 Power Stroke - increased lower end torque - a year ago. It's an awesome motor - clean, quiet, and powerful. I was concerned about the 9.9 not being adaquit power to get me through those Lake Michigan waters, but it's perfect. You may also want to do some archive searches. About a year or two ago, someone wrote an analysis of hull speed in relations to hourse power.... Great insight

Roy, lt really depends on where you sail.

If you are just motoring in tidal or river current and its not to narrow then the 9.9 is aok. But if you motor where a river, bridge or pass/cut is narrow then a 15hp is better. I came in the pass here in St Augustine yesterday with an out going tide. At full throttle I was moving at 2 knots by gps!! So all this talk of hull speed is crap if current eats up 90 percent of it. Again it all depend where you sail. Ted
