I trying to determine what size engine I should get for my 22 Hunter. I do mostly day sailing, single handle in the barnegat bay and Toms river area. I found one used that is a Johnson, 2 stroke, 20 inch shaft, electric start.. The guy I bought the boat from says a 9.9 is too large for the boat and I should get a 5 to 7 hp and a 4 stroke. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Jim

I had a

5 hp for my 22' catalina and it was underpowered for heavy lake winds in central ny. prior to selling i was looking at 9.9 and those i talked to felt it was fine. i didn't like netting out 1 knot against a 25 knot wind.

Between 5 and 10HP

I had a Santana 21 with a 7.5HP Honda 4-stroke. It was attached to a transom motor mount that swings up (spring assist). The 4-stroke was a little heavier than I would have liked but it was quiet and smooth running. I could easily go in and out of the Merrimack River entrance (MA) where the current would run really fast and the motor never let me down. If you have a swing mount, you can overpower it and possibly break something if you go over 10HP. If it mounts directly to your transom I wouldn't go below 5HP.

I have a '77 H25 and use a long shaft 9.9 with a sailboat prop. It is not that heavy, I can carry it with one hand, and has lots of power if you are caught in a seaway. I don't think you would notice the little difference in weight from a smaller motor as much as you would notice the difference in power. Just my 2 cents ...Happy Holidays Craig

On my H22 I have an 8hp mariner. Great with the electric start. With the 4 stroke beaware of the weight. You may have to upgrade the engine mount. The 8hp pushes her nicely through Narragansett Bay.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
H22

I have a 4.5 HP Johnson long shaft outboard on my Hunter 22. I make good headway with this. I cam through point lookout back into the Potomac River in 3 foot waves (some near 4 feet), 25 knots of wind, and against the current. This was a horrible ride but I managed Okay with my outboard. One thing to remember is that you are putting weight onto the stern of the boat when you are adding an outboard you are adding weight. A four stroke outboard is a lot heavier than the 2 stroke. This means that you might have to adjust other things in the boat to ballance things out. If I was adding an outboard on my H22 I would go for a 5 Hp...6 HP at the most. Definately a 2 stroke to save weight (and money). If you have any further questions about your H22 feel free to e-mail me!

7.5 Johnson for H-22

I have a 7.5 hp Johnson Sailmaster 2 stroke on the back of my 22. Remember that the Sailmaster or long shaft will keep the prop (and exhaust) in the water where it needs to be. The sailmaster also has a different prop that allows for better reverse operation. There is another H-22 on the lake that I sail with the same motor. Great power and most of the time your never running wide open so it doesn't get that loud. Nice to have more power than you need. The sailmaster alo pivots up and completely out of the water when you are sailing so ther isn't any drag. The weight of the motor is 64 pounds. hope this helps! Jim

7.5 2-stroke

We use a Merc 7.5 2-stroke on our 25.5 with acceptable results. With a third less weight to push, a 4 - 6 hp should work quite well on a 22. You might consider checking whether your mount can handle the extra wieght of a 4-stroke. Also, any outboard on a H22 definitely shifts the weight back. This might require moving some weight forward to compensate for a heavier outboard. A word of caution: Every H22 owner I know has had problems with swamping the outboard when the waves start to pick up.
