Hello everyone! I just bought a C-22, and am shopping for an outboard for it. I was wondering, from those who sail the C-22, would a 15" shaft be okay? I am looking forward to getting her in the water, and I don't want to make an expensive mistake right out of the gate. Thanks, Steve

Steve, You'll need a long shaft motor to drop the cavitation plate to the level of the bottom edge of the transom. This puts your prop in free water beneath the boat and gives you the thrust you'll need. A short shaft motor will not place the prop in free water and will therefore not be efficient. I'm assuming too that your motor mount lifts the motor to remove drag when under sail. Although you didn't ask, a 6 to 7.5 HP is all the power you'll need. I use a 6 HP with 3 blade prop (3 blade for better power) and it has been plenty strong even in some hairy situations with heavier than normal seas and winds. Good sailing to you! Ray

Hi, Yes long shaft is right. This keeps the motor mounting board out of the water and reduces drag. I would also mention that you need tocheck so that the motor shaft deep enough so that the impeller pump for the water cooling system is pumping water up and out through the pee hole underneath the motor head. On my 6hp Yamaha outboard this point is just above where the lower part with the prop bolts onto the upper section. Most people use a 2 cycle because they are generally lighter weight on the back end so it keeps the boat more level in the water. Our 6HP is normally quite adequate for getting our C22 up to hull speed at about 1/2 throttle. ~Bilbo N.E.Ohio

I have a Yahama 4 Stroke, 4 horse. I am not sure how to measure shaft length, but from the bottom of my motor to the center of the prop is 23". This works okay; it would be better if it was a couple inches longer. I have tried a 15" shaft; one can move the boat around on smooth water, if he or she sits on "top of the motor". Much depends on your motor bracket mounting. I suppose that every type of bracket can be found on a C-22. David

That's correct DW, The bracket height makes a difference in performance and cooling. It can be moved if necessary. I did this on mine with a drill, some waterweld epoxy putty and some gelcoat repair paste that matches the Catalina white from CD. Can't find the old repair after it's sanded and polished.

All three of these are made by Tohatsu and are identical except for the decal on the cowling. I bought my Nissan 6hp online at onlineoutboards.com and got a great price and quick delivery. The 4 strokes are environmentally friendly - you cannot get a new 2 stroke any more - and fairly light at 55lbs. My C22 had a Honda 8hp which I sold since it was too heavy. 5 or 6hp is what Catalina recommends. Get the 20" shaft.

4 Hp Does It For Me
I lake sail with a 4-horse long shaft. It provides me hull speed at 3/4 throttle and is light. I wasn't sure at first if a 4-horse was enough but I have been really happy with it. Not having all that weight hanging out there has been great.
