What is the proper outboard shaft size for a 22? Is 6 hp enough to travel briefly against a strong current? Thanks.

6 hp should be plenty

Unless you will be boating in an area with very strong currents, 6 hp ought to be fine. I have an 8 hp on my Oday 23 and it has more than enough power. As far as shaft length, get the longest model you can. For most manufacturer's, the long shaft model is noted as 20". I have seen one manufacturer (whose identity escapes me at the moment) that offers a 25" model for some it its engines. If that is available in the engine you want, I would strongly recommend it. Even a moderate swell will lift a long shaft model's propeller out of the water on occasion. No way will a standard shaft length (15") be long enough for a sailboat.

I use a 5hp Nissan

I believe the shaft length is 20" or 22". It does "Ok" but wish I had something a little longer for some of the swells I've encountered.

long shaft or extra long if available. 4 1/2 does pretty good on a 19' Mariner. I knew somebody that had a 6 hp on a J 29. Of course he hardly used the motor.

Outboard

Sorry for the late post, but just in case you haven't made your purchase yet. I see you are in Venice, FL. and having done some diving in that region I have a recommendation for you. It isn't a matter of how much Hp you have, it's the delivery. Any outboard of 4hp or more will move the boat fine, you will need a extra long shaft to do it well on the gulf coast. I have two outboards for my 23, a Johnson 8hp 25" shaft for coastal work(more than I need), and a Honda 2hp 4 stroke 20" shaft for inland lake work(I love the quiet, easy starting, and it only weighs 28#). A 20" shaft will not be long enough for coastal work, especially is the conditions are less than smooth. Best Wishes, Brian

Outboard for "22"

Had my 22 since 1972..... A 6 HP long shaft two cycle (lighter weight)will work fine. I lean towards the two cycle because of the lighter weight. Don't forget your a sailboat and should do much more sailing than motoring.
