I'm about to replace my old Nissan 5 hp with a Tohatsu 6 hp for my Mariner 19. I have a choice between 20-inch long shaft and a 25-inch extra long shaft. Would the extra 5 inches be worth the extra $200?

The 20 inch short shaft will in all likelyhood be out of the water on some heels, the 25 incher will probably not so often. I would imagine you will get more 'bite' with the longer shaft.
If it was me I would go with the longer shaft!

absolutely positively

buy the 25" shaft and never look back. You will be able to back up better with the longer shaft and sooner or later you are going to run into weather and the 20" will be out of the water.
