I run a 7.5 HP on mine...

My ODay 22 is outfitted with a 7.5 hp Honda 4-stroke which is more than enough to get me around. Basically it's for in/out of the marina or if the wind craps out, which nicely isn't too often.

Johnson Sailmaster 8hp

We are using a 8hp Johnson sailmaster on our 23. From what I understand anything larger would be a waste of power and fuel. You won't be able to go any faster with a bigger motor. It works great for us.

Re: Johnson Sailmaster 8hp

I have an 8 hp two stroke Nissan on my '79 Oday 23 and its plenty powerful. There is no difference in performance between the 8 and the 9.9 it replaced. I think that you can get away with less hp with a four stroke; 6 hp on a four stroke should be plenty. Whatever you buy, don't get anything other than a "long shaft" model. Some manufacturers make an extra long (25") too. I'd pay extra for that in a heartbeat.

If you are going to upgrade to a four stroke, make sure your mounting bracket is rated to take a four. Remember, its not just the extra weight of the four strokes that is at issue (in fact, the newer fours don't weigh that much more than a two of comp. hp), a four stroke generates more torque, especially at lower revs than a two, and the bracket has to be able to take it.

On my '75 O'Day 22 I have an older 9.9 Honda 4 stroke that works fine , but Yes ! the torque does test the bracket.
I also use an electric motor from Walmart ! A couple of hundred bucks including the battery and it's great ! Immediate, easilly controlled power takes me in and out of the marina with no sweat or fuss ; plus, in light wind ,it takes me through a tack without loosing way. It's also nice to know that I have a "Plan C ' if needed !. It's good for an hour or two , then plug in the charger at the marina.

O'Day 23 Power

I use a 10hp Honda four stroke, a bit heavy (hense the power lift), but lots of power and good fuel economy.

Extra Long Shaft

is the most important advice I and others can give you. When you hit rough conditions from weather or power boaters even our extra long shaft comes out of the water at times. We have a 1980 johnson 9.9 extra long shaft on ours and still runs like a dream. The extra power will not increase yours speed but will help greatly in a storm.

Thank you

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I've been trying to find an extra long shaft 8 hp without much luck. Yamaha is the only one that sells one that is light enough. Not alot of used out there. I may end up going for a 9.9 as I will have more options.

Ruidh,
Oh yes Havestraw Bay, & about three seperate ocasions on Lake George NY. But lets face it that is when we need the extra long shaft and the power the most.
