Outboard questions with lots of pictures

I have been muddling through the archives all day and haven't found an exact answer to all my questions(even though I got some great ideas). So I decided to ask. First I will start with my embarrassing story of this weekend. This is my first boat so I don't know how everything is supposed to be. I put the outboard on to take it on its maiden voyage this weekend. It was bouncing around like a jack hammer. So much that it bent the mount. Then it cut out and left me stranded in the channel coming out of the marina. Ok. Now the questions. Where is the idea place to mount the outboard? Mine is mounted directly in the center of the transom. It is a real PITA maneuvering the outboard around the backstay. It is also a huge problem getting it on and off the boat. I went around the marina to check out other setups. Most people had the outboard off to port. This seems ideal. Then I can put a swim ladder off to starboard. Also I would like to lower it as low as possible so as much of the shaft is in the water as possible. How low is too low? Also should I connect the outboard to the rudder? I read in some of the posts to just keep the outboard fixed strait and use the tiller to steer. And some said to connect the two. I think this would be difficult with the outboard directly over the rudder. What type of mount should I use? As you can see by the picture the mount I have is one of those spring loaded ones with very thin bars directly in the center. I am never going with this one again. I do not ever plan on racing. Many of the sailors I talked with never take their motor out of the water while sailing. After my experience I would prefer to just have a solid fixed mount and simply tilt the motor to take it out of the water. Any downfalls? How are these supposed to look? If you look at mine, it looks like it has some jerry rigged bracket. Thank you ahead of time for all your help.

Motor

Last question for now. This is a picture of my motor. I was told it was a 7.5 HP. It looks like it is in great condition. Does anyone have any information on this? Also is there any type of remote controls that I can use with this motor or am I going to try and rig something? Thank you again for all the help.

Good luck getting H25 advice here

Hi Stephen, I've had a lot better luck getting info on my H25 from the Catalina 25/250 website. Try there, and go to the "Trailer Sailor" website if you want to find friendly folks who'll offer educated opinions. I'm trying to find the right engine & mount combo for my H25, but I've gotten nowhere here. Likewise, no luck on queries about replacement hatches, ports, history of H25's, etc. Go to the Catalina 25/250 site right now, and you'll find an active thread about our H25s and possible engine/mount solutions. I think it's the "long vs extra long shaft" thread. I've only had my H25 for a month. Love the boat, disappointed in the support & info available.

Really, go to the Cat 25/250 site

Stephen, I just re-read your posts. The questions you've asked are being addressed on the Cat 25/250 site as we speak. Do a Yahoo search on Catalina 25/250, then go to the C25 specific forum, and you'll find the thread I referred to. Also check out their archives re: mounts. Bottom line seems to be: you need a 25" shaft engine on a heavy duty adjustable mount. A fixed mount and/or shorter shaft won't work on our boats. If you lower the mount too much, the power head can be swamped by following seas. If you raise the engine high enough for the controls to be accessible, your prop will come out of the water in lumpy seas. 25" shaft is the way to go. Any luck finding a history of our boats in the archives? I haven't found anything definitive here or on other sites. I've seen brief references to H25 Mk I vs Mk II models, but haven't found any info. Does your boat have eight opening ports, or deadlights? Apparently, that is how you tell Mk 1 boats from Mk 2's, but I can't even find enough info to confirm that.

H25 motor

You dont mention Year H25 But the bracket in the picture is the o/e that was on my 81 H25.But the motor looks long in the tooth as well. The bracket at best is not very strong and mine had a lot of sideways movement.I replaced mine with one that had a center handle and rigged a line and pulley to the back rail.As for your motor Quiting Make sure you have the tank vent open. I kept mine in the center and free from the rudder, you will find out how much easier you can steer with rudder and motor seperate in tight situations. the split back stays will always be in the way.Good luck with you sailing adventures Tom Cooper Prologue 1 V32

h25 outboard

You have a sweet little racer/cruiser in the h25 and I find it appaling that you would compromise her superior hull architecture by dragging the motor while under sail. Clearly your mounting bracket is tired and should be replaced. Any good new unit will do for your lightweight two stroke motor. In all likelyhood your motor pivots out of the water, and unless you want to replace the lower unit sooner rather than much later you'll keep the motor out of the water when not in use. Mount the kicker anywhere you want on that tiny transom, but use the motor for forward or reverse thrust only and steer with your rudder. You will have much more control that way. Universal remote controls for throttle and trans are easily available, but mark where you mount them in that tiny cockpit. Sail the boat first, find out what space you need for tacking, and mount the remote levers out of the way. Hope this helps, Jim

Propulsion space for the H25

I have a H25 Cherub with an inboard diesel. Curious, what is the space used for on a H25 w/o an inboard motor? Is it a berth? Learning all I can, thanks, Mark.

extra space

My inboard was removed years ago before I bought the boat. I am trying to convert the extra space with some shelves to store my stuff. That was another group of questions I was going to look into down the road. How much would it cost to put one back in? How hard would the job be? Is there any type of motor other than a yanmar? Oh and I forgot to enter the year. I have a 1974.
