I'm considering buying a new auxiliary outboard for my O'day 25. My question is, would a brand new 8hp Mercury put out as much thrust as my current 1977 Johnson 9.9? I've heard that horsepower is now measured at the prop, which is somehow different from the way "they" once measured it. The savings would be considerable, but maintaining hull speed is critical for the long runs across Lake Ontario in dead seas.
