I bought a Gamefisher 7.5 hp outboard which ran fine when I bought it. I replaced the fuel line that came with it wit a new 3/8 fuel line. The fuel line I took off of it was smaller than the new one. The problem is that now when I start it it only runs for a few seconds. If I take off the fuel line it will run for a while, until the fuel in the bowl runs out. My question is can the larger size fuel line be causing me problems? Also on the quick connect going to the motor there is no hose clamp. Could that cause problems? e.g sucking air? Any help is greatly appreciated. THank you

Are you saying that with fuel in the carb bowl, if the fuel line is still attached, it will run for a few seconds, if the fuel line is removed it runs until fuel in the bowl runs dry?

With out a hose clamp and having a larger hose you are probably sucking air. I had that problem this week end when the O ring would not seal on the quick connect. Motor had teouble starting then ran lousy. Solved it temporarily with a small piece of pastic bag wrapped around the fitting to stop the air leak. Ran great after that. Putting a clamp on it would be your nexy step.

Thanks Frank. That is the only thing that made sense to me but I thought I would bounce it off the forum.

You really should use fittings that are the proper size for the hose you're using... otherwise you're risking fuel leaks, the fuel cutting off unexpectedly and other such things... all of which can be very, very unhealthy if they happen at the wrong time.

I still don't understand how an air leak or loose fittings could cause these symptoms. I almost think that something is causing a vacuum in the fuel system when the hose is connected which doesn't allow the fuel through the system. Fuel is in the bowl so an air leak is not going to cause a problem like what is seen here. Since you're creating an air leak by removing the line. I'm also thinking you're removing whatever may be causing the vacuum in the system. In this case, very well could be the smaller diameter hose, although 3/8 seems like it should be large enough. How's your fuel tank? Primer bulb?

Basic ?

Are you sure the primer bulb is on in the proper direction?

To test for an air leak....
immediately after starting the motor spray wd40 or starting fluid onto the suspected leak. If the motor does not die, leak found. This is how I finally found a bad carb gasket that was causing problems with my Suzuki. The motor kept skipping and I needed to find where it was sucking air.

if you have a remote gas tank another cause which would explain the difference with the hose on or off is a bad primer bulb. If the bulb is NOT acting as a foot valve, it can actually suck fuel out of the carb after you prime and start. reverse flow really can happen. don't forget to make sure your air valve is open on the tank.

Before someone jumps on this..... make sure you perform this test on a dock or at home where you can control any issues that come up. Using WD40 all but eliminates the issue of fire, but starting fluid can be used safely with a little common sense and care.

Let us know how you fix it. We all learn from each other.
