Outboard Onboard Storage

I have just purchased a 1971 C & C and as part of my ongoing toy collection have also purchased a Zodiac and 5 horse Honda outboard weighing about 40kg or 80-90 lbs. Problem now is that I cannot find a place to store the motor - I found a block for outboards that attaches to the stern railing however the brace and upper railings are not smooth and the block will not fit over the joint. The marine store suggests that I cut the plastic block to make room for the joint. Any other ideas?? and most importantly - I am wondering if this railing will support the weight.

Stowe your outboard

I don't know what size C&C you have, but I had a C&C 30. I connected a 2"X4" inside the port locker, between the shelve along the hull and the cockpit floor. The outboard clamp fastened to this mount. I was able to fit a 15 hp Merc inside this space with the motor leg facing aft. I had a commercially available harness on the outboard arranged so the strap "handle" was on the back(on the horsepower number) of the outboard. I then hooked a block and tackle to the boom and the other end to the "handle". I was then able to haul the outboard in and out with strain.

Thanks for your reply - I should hand included that this is a 27 ft C & C - I understand what you are saying but there does not appear to be enough room in the lockers on either side. I can see no problem cutting a piece out of the block and then attaching it to the railing but will the railing take that kind of weight for a sustaining period of time.

Hi Ted - We sail a C&C 30. The last owner purchased a triangular-shaped frame from WestMarine. This frame attaches to the back of the double stern rails, & the outboard slips & fastens over the top of the frame. It seems to work really well, & it is fairly easy to get the motor from that position to the dinghy. Our small Yamaha weighs roughly the same as your motor. Rick

I had a 1971 C&C 27 for many years (wonderful boat!) andfound that the teak outboard holders available in West Marine, etc. fit just fine over the stern rail where the "T" connector met the vertical section. That being said, I would never expect to put 80 lbs on it. I used it for a 28 lb motor at best. I did store a 6 hp Johnson long shaft in the port cockpit locker occasionally, laying it on old cushions & wedging it so it would not move when the boat heeled. I was always careful to run the gas out of the carb first and to put a plastic bag over the lower unit to catch any oily drippings from it.

The aspect of the outboard weight is exactly what worries me and I tend to agree - 80/90 lbs is too much for the size of that railing - either have to find somewhere to store this rather large engine or buy a smaller one. Thanks Alex and others for replying and the advice. Ted

Ted.. We store a 90 lb Yamaha on the rail and after 10,000 miles and 10 years of cruising have had no problems. We bought 3 sqr ft. of 3/4" starboard. Cut it in half. put the halves together. Drilled thru both. 4 places. with a tap threaded the back half. bolt them together with flat head countersunk machine screws. Using a 1" (+ or -)drill make passages for the tubing of your pushpit so you can clamp the starboard over the railing. It's good to center the board over a vertical post. Have the top extend 2 or 3 inches above the top rail so your passage ways fot the tubing make a T inside the starboard. Bill

Thanks Bill - that is exactly what I am going to do. As I stated previously, I'd purchased a commercial block that is considerably smaller than the one you describe and given the much smaller area, I'm sure that it would have given me problems. Thanks again. Ted
