Greetings,
I am looking at a Hunter 30 which needs an engine rebuillt or replacement.
I have a Catalina 25 with a 2005 Yamaha 9.9T four stroke 25" outboard.
Is it possible for me to use the 9.9 on the Hunter? At the very least for the season, with work to be done on the diesel inboard in the off season?

I think what you have to be concerned about is the thrust of the engine versus the momentum and inertia of the boat. A Catalina 25 has about 4500 pounds of mass while a Hunter 30 has about 10,000 pounds. To get the Hunter moving in the same way you're going to need twice the thrust you had on the Catalina. There is no direct correlation between HP and thrust, it also depends on the prop you choose. My opinion now, but I think you could make a 15 HP work with the right prop...

Thanks for the input, I guess the proper question would be can an outboard be used on a 30 foot Boat, given the height of the transom?

Peekskill? Are you on the Hudson? Is your sailing limited to the river? Seems like the currents are pretty strong and you might have problems with anything less than 15. We had a 30 on our little lake with an outboard and it was a dog motoring and sailing. The previous owner had to add a motorboard low on the transom for the reason that you cite. It was really hard to operate and almost impossible to raise out of the water. So he usually just let it drag. He sold the boat after one season.

I know what it is to have a boat and not be able to sail. But the best option is wait for the inboard and not botch up what is a quality sailboat.
