Already Done
Hey Trent,I recall that this subject was brought up last year regarding the installation of an outboard in-lieu of an inboard. If your dumping the Atomic four then you already have gasoline tankage in place so the big quesiton is mounting location and controls. If I were going to an outboard I would mount the engine mount on the starboard side where access to the transom at the quarterberth area was available. It would be an easy thru-bolt installation. Running controls (throttle and shifter) would be just as easy with mounting along the cocpkit seat. The issue is horsepower. I have the 14 horsepower inboard diesel (Universal M-18). At a minimum I would not settle for anything less than a 15 horse, electric start, long shaft engine, and thats providing your not in high tidal, area where it would be tough to make headway or your ocean bound.I would consult with an Outboard dealer, research the best mounts and hardware, check the condition of your fuel tanks and spend your money wisely. For the cost of a new 15+ hp four stroke long shaft engine, you could possibly get that Atomic 4 restored and thats an option I would strongly consider. The Atomic 4 was a workhorse in its day and a very dependable engine.Bob'88 Mark II
