Even with a long shaft your prop will leave the water

on a large swell.

Ultra-long

This is what I run on my 1983 Mac25 - I replaced a 9.9HP Yamaha - Too heavy(also had a long shaft)

Definitely not short...

The longer the better, if you want to keep your prop in the water in any decent waves. With a short shaft, you would be losing power when the prop comes out, and its not real good for your motor! :(

There are generally three lengths available

There are generally three lengths available. Short (15"), long (20"), and extra long (25"). I have a Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster with an extra long 25" shaft mounted to the transom (in the usual spot) on my 26S (also known as 26C), and it leaves the water in swells on the atlantic ocean.
