I have a 1989 22 foot hunter and recently my outboard Yamaha 9.9 short shaft quit. What can you rcecommend I buy to replace it? I bought the boat with the motor but have not been entirely happy with it during my 7 years of ownership. Any advise would be helpful.

why do you need a new motor? Has it quit or died? 2 cylces are lighter than 4 cyclesl.... and cared for they last (my dad has a 2 cycle from the 1950's and he still uses it!) Does it need a rebuild? or just a cleanning? Did you leave full in it? (this turns to varnish in the fuel lines... If you do need a new engine, go with a 4-stroke long-shaft.

That seems like a pretty big motor for a H22. We've got a 7.5 Merc (2-stroke) on our 25.5 and its adequate. We had trouble with our outboard at the beginning of the season. We had the problems corrected and now its reliable. Costs less that 1/10th the price of new. But there is a concern. A short shaft outboard on a H22 is problematic at best. Even long shaft outboards will swamp as the boat pitches in weather. If you need justsification, **that** is the reason to get a different outboard.

Just be aware that if you go 4 stroke you may need to chnage the engine mount as the old one may not support the heavier engine. although heeavier it is nicer. also the long shaft is a must. saw some good prices on e-bay for new heavy duty mounts.

2 cycle or 4 cycle?

Is your Yamaha a 2 cycle or 4 cycle engine. I believe that they made both. The 4 cycles are nice engines, but they are heavy and need to have slightly more maintenance. The 2 cycles are noisers and generally more powerful. They are also less fuel efficent than their 4 cycle brothers. Check out the pricce of a rebuild before you jump into spending 2500-3000 for a new engine.

I went with a Honda

For my H22, I use a Honda 5hp 4 cycle longshaft. It runs quiet, and you don't have to mix oil and gas. The fuel economy is excellent. Also the motor weighs about 50-60lbs.

Go long

Whatever size engine you get make sure it is a long shaft model. I have a 1996 8hp and it pushes just fine, I also believe a 6hp would do fine. Good luck with your search.
