I have a 22 footer. Can I use a 15 horse power on this boat, instead of a 9.9? Also, what is the recommended prop size? email: gonesailing2003@aol.com Thanks! Lynn

You could, but why would you want to?

You won't be able to push the boat any faster (hull speed limit) and you'll just have more weight aft which can affect sail trim. If you have access to a 15hp already you could use it, but given the cost and extra weight, I'd go with the smaller engine (9.9hp is probably overkill as it is!). Just my 2 cents, Trevor

Motor Mount

I agree with Trevor that a 15 would be much more than needed and heavier than desirable on a C22. Also, you would need a very sturdy motor mount and very well attached to the transom. If it were me, I'd think about trading the 15 for a 6 with a long shaft. Dick

15hp is way too much

Me thinks a 15 is overkill - too much wight and power. My 4hp Mercury has been very sufficent for my inland lake sailing - will get it to hull speed. Good luck.

SailMaster 8

I purchased a Johnson Sailmaster 8 (long shaft)two years ago for my cat 27. It was a replacement of a really old Sailmaster 8. Only one time in the 12 years I've owned my boat did I feel 8 hp wasn't enough, and really shouldn't have been out that day anyhow. I agree with the others; 15 hp is waaaay too much. Not to mention the cost difference.

9.9 vs 15

A 9.9 is usually the same motor & weight as a 15. Only the carburation is different. The extra hp will help you motoring into strong winds and wave. It may use a little more gas.

Right size is better

I had a 9.9 on our 26', and it was strong enough in all conditions. For a 22, I would say a 9.9 is as big as I would go or overkill. A 15 HP is too much (though yes, likely the same weight as the 9.9). Certainly it will work, but I would much prefer a smaller engine. It will be lighter, for better balance, faster sailing :), and easier to use. My wife used to have trouble lifting and maneuvering the 9.9 (4-stroke honda). So, if I already had the engine, I'd probably use it, but if buying it, look for the right one for the boat.
