Have received different answers to the question regarding the manufactures specs on shaft length. My 94 H23.5 transon measures 14inches from top surface of the transom to the lowest point on the stern. Inquiries to outboard dealers produce varying answers to the question of just what are you measuring when you say a certain model is 20 inches, or 14 inches, or whatever. So what do you say?

20 or 25 inch shaft

If you're buying an outboard, get at least a 20 inch shaft, a 25 inch may be better. The prop on a shorter shaft outboard will cavitate in bigger seas. There's not real downside to going longer. I went to a 25 inch shaft on my 240 and it's great, no cavitation. Marc_B
