I did something very similar on my 170 trailer, except that my board sticks out the side, rather than the front of the post. I like your orientation better. I may change mine.
My only fear is that the grain of the wood will eventually cause a split. I had considered adding in a thin piece of steel plate, but I haven't done it yet. So far, my 20 mile trips to the boat ramp, on mostly smooth roads, haven't caused any problems.
