How I did it.
I have a 1994 23.5 with a Tohatsu outboard. A few years back I had a slip that was really tricky to get in and out of and I needed to be standing up to see everything I had to not run into.I purchased a Nissan remote control kit and converted the outboard to use the remote throttle/shifter instead of the tiller throtle and the shift lever on the side of the outboard. The kit I purchased was the type that would be used on an aluminum boat, mounted to the inside of the hull, probably on the top railing. From some marine plywood I cut out something that looked like a plywood racket ball paddle. I mounted the remote control unit to the plywood and the plywood to the stern rail using the some clamps I got from West Marine. The clamps are on the handle part of the plywood cutout and clamp onto a vertical stanchion. The remote unit is attached to the paddle part of the plywood and sticks up above the horizontal part of the stern rail.It works great. I can stand on the seat and still reach the remote control unit to control speed and shift into forward, reverse, or neutral. I have seen 23.5s with the shift lever mounted on the seat (the vertical portion between the cockpit floor and the top of the seat), but one still had to stoop to reach the controls.Al BeattieElsewhere
