OUTBOARD MOTOR CAT22

I have just purchased a 1981 Catalina 22. It has the original motor mount with a Evinrude (prob 1981) 9.9. I want to replace the Evinrude with a new motor and have a few questions:Is it common to put a Honda (or other brand) 4 stroke 8 HP motor. This particular motor wieghs 87 pounds dry weight, is this too heavy for the boat?What is the typical size motor used?Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!Thanks,Chris

My choice and why

I went with a Nissan 4 stroke sinsgle cylinder with the 20 inch leg and am quite satisfied with it. It weighs about 68 lbs with the charging electric head and has flush ports for cleaning up after saltwater use. It gets excellent gas mileage. It is the 6 hp model. I wanted a Johnson (white, like the boat) but since the changeover in ownership there is a huge screwup in production runs and the new owner, Bombardier, is in deep trouble and may not be around much longer. why has no manufacturer figured out that we all have white boats--and a white motor would look better than a black one???????Hondas are common but I thought they were heavy and expensive. Nissans got high marks from owners.

Motor Choice

If you want to save a couple of bucks, buy a Tohatsu. They manufacture the motors for Nissan (same motor). Compare yourself. You can buy direct on-line. Go to www.tohatsu-outboards.com and www.nissan-outboards.com. Save the sales tax. My Tohatsu 4 stroke runs great. They can be serviced at any Nissan dealer/service center.

Think about service

All the motors mentioned in the other replies are good motors. The problem comes if you ever need parts or service. I speak from experience, none of it good. If I was buying a motor it would be a Mercury, it is a good motor, you can get parts anywhere, and everyone works on them. Make some calls about parts and service before you buy. You will find fewer places will work on them and parts for foreign made motors are taking weeks, if you are lucky.
