I’m cleaning my carb for my 1998 Suzuki 2-stroke 6 HP outboard motor. It has a rough idle. I have a quick question: Should the pilot jet be clear all the way though its entire length? In other words, if it is not clear from end to end, is it clogged, or is it made that way? Carb cleaner spray, an overnight soak

, fine wire reaming and compressed air will not clear it end to end. Thanks! BrianW

Yes, the jets are actually what are causing the rough idle. On my Yamaha 9.9 it was to low idle jets that were causing my outboard not to run correctly. Soak the jet in carb cleaners, they will come clean. Just be patient. I used a super tiny sewing needle to clean mine after soaking. But be very very careful. The jet hole could expand if one is too aggressive with anything being used to clean the jet holes.

I would recommend buying spare jets just in case. Then you can see if the jet narrows, or your jet is really clogged.

The secret is to soak the jets and carburetor body in "carburetor cleaner" for 24 hours. Blow dry with compressed air and reassemble.
