Outboard Install

HelloI have done these things.I took the engine off the boat completely as propeller shaft and propeller.. old engine leaked water and oil made the boat dirty inside.I bougth 8 hp outboard engine, but I recommend more power in the windy conditions. I installed it in theback aft wall ofthe boat. Don't put gasolinetank inside the boat, anywhere in it, it is dangerous because gasoline vapourise more inthe air, just use tanks outside the boat.Raytiistai 19. marraskuuta 2013 bonnerwhitman@... kirjoitti:

Hi,i\'ve just done it too. Motor is a 9.9hp, yamaha high trust, 20inch shaft. Tank outside the boat too, strapped to the railing. The braket is one design by catalina but I had to weld plate of stainless to compensate the 22° of the transom but you can do that also with a piece of celoron for instance. What I like from that bracket is the four spring that make lifting to motor very easy and the fact that it has 17 inch of travel which is more than any other I\'ve seen. I\'ve put stainless back plate. Here are the linkshttp://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/707/outboard-motor-mount-four-spring.cfmhttp://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/993/motor-mount-transom-backing-rails.cfmI will have all the time to try since my holydays starts Saturday, yeh!MarieFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comTo: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comDate: Mon, 27 Jul 2015 08:02:45 +0300Subject: Re: [AlbinVega] Outboard Install

I've only just picked up this group of messages so forgive me if I'm repeating other advice. As has been stated the Combi is a robust and simple piece of kit once you have it apart. You say it works in astern, does it vary the pitch or just work at one speed in astern. It is probably something to do with the linkage to the combi rather than the basic gears. If it is not leaking water and grease into the boat the seals etc are probably OK. I would hestitate to change over to another transmission as this would be costly and not a simple job.I would also keep the Volvo going if you can.I changed my engine to a beta 16 years ago mainly because I was fed up with the combi but the engine (MD6a was fine). I sold it to a local fisherman and last time I was in the area I noticed it is still running. The Beta has been a great engine for me but I miss the ability to hand start it like the VolvoMike On Monday, 27 July 2015, 16:11, "marie marie mnhdl@... I am excited about the response to my post. Lots of talent and knowledge in this group. I have left my email address on one of the messages. So the thing is I still am no further ahead in my comprehension of the combi.

I am supposedly a clever fellow.
(Though my wife is not convinced.)
But when I saw the diagrams for the Combi I phoned the boatyard and emailed them a copy then bought the boat over.
Worked for me. :)

Beowulf, Attched is a link for manuals on MD6 and MD7 engines. There
are also manuals which I think contain the combi system and there
alternator manual and they are in most European and English
languages they down load as a PDf . I learned how to work on
alternators by laying in my bunk and reading an hour or so every
night . I also Hd a couple of Niger calders books that are ecelent
an I bought them cheap online. These books are bibles for me. Star
downloading and reading if there are things you don't understand
there is knowledge here in abundance. Also the Low Cost Voyaging
list hes some real know how on it and they are willing to
help. Doug

Thanks Doug this is
the first time I have seen this PDF storehouse.
Interestingly the first time seeing the schematic of the Combi system
with the reference numbers included. I
had all the manuals with the exception of the English /Swedish installation
instructions for the Combi which have provided at the very least an indication
of how it should be installed correctly.
I was curious to find out if
anyone had done a Combi rebuild and installation as Steve has the rebuild kits.
I have the boat in the water and I am assuming that I have to pull her out to
get at the Combi sorted. I am not a
complete novice with all things mechanical and have rebuilt my old landrover
engine from the block up. However there
are as you know many nuances and particular quirks to any job so I will be keen
to hear from anyone who has actually done this specific task. Thanks again for the info. John

Since you rebuitl that engine I have every confidence you can fix
your Combi and I bet you will find it much easier than you expect.
I'd be very interested in knowing wht you find wrong. Thats always
good for all to know. By the way I printed copies and put them in a
book on-board. Doug.

Hi JohnI rebuilt my combi about 4 years ago with Steve's kit. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but am handy and was able to do the full job in one day. The most time consuming tasks was that I need to make my own gaskets to reassemble the combi. From the symptoms you describe, I think your problems is either with the cable linkage, or the gears in the propellor hub.Start with the linkage first. You can do this while the boats in the water. Your goal is to have the linkage adjusted so the cam located on the combi can move fully forward and back.If it's not the linkage, you'll need to have the boat out of the water and you'll need to disassemble the propellor to have a look in there. If a gear is broken, you may need another propellor. Steve can probably track one down, or you can check with people on this site. Maybe someone who changed over to a beta has the old propellor hangin around. This is all pretty basic mechanics. Certainly simpler than a engine rebuild. Bob Fuchs

Manning, as you have obviously already deduced, our boats have a Viking heritage. As such you surely know the Vikings prayed to the Norse gods for knowledge, advice, wisdom and courage. Hello Men, Good morning I am owner of Vega #3361 S/Y Viking in Charleston, SC. USA. I still have the volvo md7-a in Viking with the Combi. My boat was really a barn find up in the Chesapeake Bay and I motor sailed her home over a two week period in 2013. Before I left on my voyage i had the yard inspect clean and grease the combi. I could find no way to attach a zinc to the shaft or the combi. The Viking has now been in the salt water since the Summer of 2013. I clean the bottom and wheel quarterly by a professional hull cleaning company. I have had no problem with the combi since her launching in 2013. How often does the combi require servicing ? And who is Steve? Sounds like I need to contact him. Keep writing you guy's I am learning so much from both of you. Thank you so much.

I have heard some chatter about people buying LWDs on line fro
Austrailia. I know a hard ware store near a West Marine that
competes with very good prices. The store is Hurds hardware Store in
Deltaville Va. You might look them up on line and email them. They
are very Reputable and I bought Leds for my boat there. doug
