I have a 5hp Mercury outboard on my 192 that is having trouble running; I think related to fuel that has been in the tank since the winter. I did put stabilizer in the fuel but I suspect it's bad anyway. Question is; how do I go about getting rid of the fuel in the 1 gal internal tank and the 2 gal fuel can in the cockpit locker? This may be a stupid question, but how and where can I dispose of gasoline in a safe an clean way?

use that old gas
I put old gas in a seperate can and use it up in lawn mower etc by just putting a little in mower at a time with good gas. (even if its a gas oil mix) In the old days I dumped old gas in my 59 jeep. It would run on anything LOL. eric

I may be the last person to have one; but since my lawn is about 500 ft2, I use a push mower, and I don't think a 2005 Subaru would appreciate old outboard gas. Other suggestions?

Give it to your neighbor
With the caveat that it came from your outboard tank. He'll appreciate the free gas and you won't have to deal with it. I usually strain my old gas and put it in my cars. That little bit usually won't cause any problems. To be safe, I usually add some fuel additives at the same time.

...run in a mower. I had a mower that would not crank this year. I was told it was bad gas. I would not believe it. My neighbor poored it out, put new in, it fired right up. Won't gas evaporate if it is left outside where the critters can't get to it? (Of course far enough away from anything that ignite it) Jack

Gasoline formulas change during the year
Refiners change the blends that make up gasoline seasonally so that it works consistently over the temperature differences between winter and summer. So even fresh gas used out of season wouldn't work as well and storing it only makes matters worse. I mix leftover gas in with fresh in the tank of the car and it hasn't been a problem.
