Outboard for 30 footer

Jon, This may be more information than you asked for but this was my experience with a boat of similar displacement. I had a 1982 Seidelmann 295 that I used for about 10 years from 1987 to 1997. It was originally sold new with a choice of inboard or outboard. Mine had a Honda 4 stroke 10 or 9.9 hp outboard that served me pretty well but had been abused by the previous owner. I put a new 9.9 hp Yamaha 4 stroke outboard with remote electric start on it in 1992 and ran it for several years including a 5 week trip up to the Chesapeake Bay where we motored several hundred miles in the ICW and Dismal Swamp Canal. The Yamaha had gear reduction, and a large wide 3 blade prop that pushed the Seidelmann very even in fairly ropugh seas. By advancing the throttle, the stern of the boat would squat down in the water more as I advanced the throttle which helped keep the prop in the water in heavy seas. The Honda did a great job too. I used the original Teleflex controls for shift and throttle mounted in the cockpit as with the high freeboard it would be hard to reach the motor controls. Both of these motors were designed for sailboat drive and if put on a planing boat would not give much speed as the were designed for max thrust at speeds of about 6 - 7 knots. It is most important to have a heavy duty engine mount for the 4 stroke engines as they have lots of thrust and weigh about 100 lbs. The engine mount should have good vertical travel I think about 18 inches and shouls be stood off the boat with spacers to allow tilting the motor up out of the water when sailing or docked. The mount was spring loaded to take some weight off the motor. I had a block and tackle arrangement to help lift the motor. The mount I had was made in Canada. There are larger 4 stroke engines available but 9.9 is all I feel you would need to push your 30 footer. Another great thing about the 4 stroke outboard engines is heir great fuel efficiency compared to the 2 stroke engines. I could run for 10 - 12 hours on 6 gallons. Hope this information helps.

Why?

Would you want to change the look of a great boat. That hull was designed for an inboard and with the variety of them available tody you should be able to repower cheaply and relialably. Not to mention a new 4stroke outboard is nearly the cost of a good used diesel. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com
