I need advice on a good choice for an outboard for a Hunter 18.5.What horsepower?Long shaft or short? Two cycle or four?

Long

Two cycle or four is up to you, but you'll be driving a cripple if you try a short shaft on that sailboat in any kind of waves. Anything from 3 to 8 Hp would be fine. I'd recommend that Tohatsu long shaft 4 HP model for good motoring performance and for light weight and ood sailing performance.

Check out the owner reviews here on the web site

Ken - I had a quick look at a few of the H18.5 owner reviews on this web site (the 1990 models). There are 23 reviews altogether. Anyway, two of them said they are quite happy with their 5HP motors. The third didn't like the 3.5HP, but that was because it didn't have any reverse! Anyway, have a look at them all if you haven't already. It should be of interest to you.
