Looks like ours is dead. I'm looking for something suitable for SF Bay sailing with the occasional excursion out the gate. Anyone have opinions about the size, manf, model, year ... we should be looking at as a replacement?
We have a 15 hp on ours which sails in Lake Michigan whereas I have seen many recommending a 10. We are happy to have the extra power for getting underway and it moves the boat nicely without having to run full throttle.
I'll second the suggestion for a 15 in that environment. I think a 10 (or even 8) would be fine for inland use but for SFB, you'll probably need the umph of a few extra horses. Top-o-the-line outboards = Honda but the Tohatsu/Nissan motors are pretty nice. Compare carefully the weight and thrust of a new one to what you had (didn't say) cause it is possible you'll have to beef up the transom; especially if you decide on a 15.
