A question for h26, 260, or similar boat owners. What is the smallest o.b. that you are happy with? I am considering selling my Honda 4 stroke 8 h.p because I think its weight affects the sailing qualities of my h26. A 2 stroke would be lighter and simpler. I use an engine to get out of my marina and into the Bay of Banderas, and then return after a day's sailing. I think I could do with less power than I have now. Gracias para sus surgerencias. I would keep the four stroke but change the prop to a shallow pitch (ten degree pitch more or less) rather than go to a two-stroke. Although the two-stroke has fewer moving parts (+) the 4 stroke has much more torque at the low end of the power band. This means that with your four stroke, the tops of the pistons won't get cherry red, as would be the case with a 2-stroke.Also, the four stroke uses much less gas. Can't imagine that the weight difference would be more than thirty lb. Everything's a tradeoff. Hope this helps. Jim

For the sake of the enviornment, everyone will be switching to 4 stroke engines. Yes, 2 stokes are lighter and produce more HP per cc but they dump hydocarbons into the water at a much greater rate than 4 strokes. Of course, weight in the ends of any boat affects its sailing performance. Ideally your engine should be removed and moved to the most central and lowest point in your boat. That means sitting it right over the keel. However, if you have an anchor hanging off you bow you're affecting your sailing performance aswell. I sail with an aluminum anchor stowed in the bilge and all possible weight off the boat because I race and performance for me is of the highest priority. If the same is true for you, then by all means, use the smallest lightest 2 stoke that you can find. Otherwise go 4 stroke.
