I have a Beneteau 217S & would like to fit an electric start outboard. The lightest I can find is a Tohatsu 8hp but this weighs 37kg. My existing outboard weighs 28kg. If I fit a Tohatsu I will have to also fit a stronger bracket as the one supplied is limited to 30kg. My main concern is that the extra weight may unbalance the boat (ie too stern heavy). Has anybody any experience or comments regarding my plans?

Regards

Herbert

The extra weight will be less than desirable, but will not unbalance the boat, at least not to a degree that will be un-correctable with shift crew or other gear. You could think about moving your battery forward to counteract the extra weight aft if you desire, but that also has the effect of pushing MORE weight to the ends of the boat, which is even less desirable.

One good thing; due to dual rudders your OB mount is on the centerline. The First 235 (which typically uses a 9.9HP electric start motor) often lists to starboard due to the extra weight on that side.
