I'm a senior citizen sailor....sailing since 1946....sailed most of Bahamas for 7 years with my wife on a 36 Catalina....been away from the water for 3 years....just bought a Hunter 240.....QUESTION: Looking for an electric start OB....saw a new Yamaha, with shifter on it's tiller....want the most "senior-friendly" OB....need some hand-holding. I have a H260 with a Honda and know what it is to be going back and forth to the shift and throttle when docking.

Herb, Our 2000 H240 is equipped with a 9.9 Yamaha with the shifter in the tiller and I love it. Our last boat had an outboard with the shifter on the side of the cowling and was a pain in the you know what. Having the shifter right next to the throttle is the way to go in my opinion.

The Mercurys are available with a "Grip Shift" turn the throttle one way and it shifts into forward twist the other way it goes into reverse. With one hand on the tiller and the other on the engine you can really manuver well.

You'll want the longest shaft you can get and electric start with power tilt. Also, the engine-rudder connection makes steering much easier.

I am also a senior citizen last season I got rid of my 20 year old 8hp 2 cycle mercury and bought a new 4 cycle 8hp Tohatsu pull start for my Pearson 26W Im 72 with a bad back and have no trouble pulling the start cord It starts easy on the first or second pull. I found the motor more than adequite It moves the boat at hull speed at half throttle. I choose the
tohatsu because at 83lbs it was the lightest of all the available outboards. But its to heavy
for me to pick up. One more comment The mercury did not have a separate gear shift the throttle and gear shift gear were one unit. This means you cannot increase the throttle
in neutral you have to put the engine in gear first. I found waiting the 5 minutes to warm the
engine up before I could put it in gear a big minus.

Practical Sailor has done a couple of reviews on small outboards (9.9hp) . It would be worth your while to get a copy of the June 2007 report and the March 2009 update on this subject. These tests were done with short shaft OBs set up on a WalkerBay RIB but you want to make sure you get the longest shaft possible. If you want to save your back get power tilt.

Bottom Line: PS still likes the Mercury 9.9. Honda get cudos for its five-year warranty and quiet running. The Yahama has an outstanding flushing setup.
