I am considering purchasing a 1978 Catalina 27 which is powered by an original equipment Atomic 4 gas engine. The engine has been cooled by raw sea water for about 20 seasons and I am concerned that it may fail because of that. If that were to happen, I would like to solve the problem, at least temporarily, by adding a transom bracket and outboard motor, probably 10 hp. Is there any concern about the transom of this boat being sturdy enough to support an outboard motor and bracket?

Never heard of any problem.....

if you're concerned you could reinforce the area with a slab of plywood on the inside. Kind of like a big backing plate. You might give Catalina customer service a call to get their input, especially if you're putting one of those heavy 4 strokes back there.

Outboard

If you put plywood on the inside of the hull to distribute the load it should be fine. Then when you bolt the engine bracket, bolt it threw plywood. Paint the plywood or use something else that will not rot. My father did this on his 30 foot Irwin when his Atomic 4 went down. His boat is 10,000 pounds and has 9.9 Yamaha high thrust with high thrust prop. In calm water it goes to hull speed just over start setting. 8 Yamaha high thrust would push your boat. Keep in mind new engine and bracket will be a lot of money. Maybe able to find rebuilt inboard for same money. Or look at used outboard is what you have in mind?
