Hello all. Not my fault, but someone put fuel/oil mix in my four stroke outboard. Question: how do I purge the fuel and get this baby running? Many thanks!

No Expert But,

It would seem to me if you removed the spark plugs and pulled on the starting rope or cranked it it would clear out what was in the cylinders. You may have to plug the hole with a finger to get all of the gas sucked out of the carbs though. The plugs probably need a good cleaning or replacing anyway.

Similar, but not the same.

I have never owned a 4-cycle but in another life turned over a few racing craft. The 2-cycles were pretty easy to clean out and restart. Starting with an empty or disconnected tank you should be able to pump most of the fuel out. With clean and properly gapped plugs a little oil should not keep it from starting and flushing what remains. Best part is it really should not have hurt anything.

oil

hello scottie, drain the fuel tank put in fresh fuel and start it up. there should be only a cup of oiled fuel in the lines, so in about five minuets it should be gone. if your engin won't run because the plugs have been fouled, either clean them or change them. good luck john

My Single Concern

would be the compression with the oil mixed I doubt it would be too much to blow the rings or the head gasket but I would not chance it.

Drain the carb too!

I would drain the carb, too, before I tried to start it.

No Problem

Hi Scottie, All that everyone else has advised is correct but the oil content in two stroke fuel is so low that, unless you have a racing engine, it is unlikely that the fuel would cause any problems with either starting or running - indeed it might have done the engine a bit of good. I suggest you look elsewhere for the cause

Scott, With a clean spark plug you should be able

to just start the engine and run it until all the oiled gas is gone. It will not hurt the motor!!!! Purging the motor or carb is not required. It will burn the oiled fuel as it is not smart enough to know the difference. Garsh, how do you think all those old oil smoking Chevy's and Ford's keep running? (of course their all fords). The only thing that could happen is to foul a sparkplug and I doubt that. A good hard run on the engine as you burn out this gas would be best if possible. If it wont start and the sparkplug is good then there is another problem and not the gas. E-mail if you have problems. Ray S/V Speedy

Got spark?

A quick and easy spark check-squirt a little carb cleaner in the intake-NEVER use ether. If that doesn't fire, and you're sure the plugs aren't fouled badly, It's ignition. If it's elec. start, some motors need a minimum 11 volts to fire. Less will turn it over, but not fire. Good luck.
