Outboard Bracket Replacement

Mine is thru bolted. You need to climb into the hold under the cockpit and check.

RBONE is correct. Mine is through bolted, with backing plates, and locking nuts. If you have some funky install with lag bolts, your lucky to still have a motor and bracket

My 23 came from the PO with the 9.9hp 4 stroke (Yamaha copy). It was attached to the original outboard bracket. when I used it the first season I found the engine great but the mounting bracket was totally inadequate. I actually had to have a small chain block tied to the pushpit rail to winch it into the up position.
4 strokes a quite heavy, my 9.9 is 112 lbs and the springs on original mounts are way too weak.
I ended up buying a Garelick 71091 (15 1/2" lift) motor bracket and making a new tapered block for mounting.
My new set up works great now, I can sit and easily raise or lower the motor with one hand.
The tall mount and the large engine makes for a big assembly at the transom.
You will have to drill new mounting holes through your transom using strong backing plates.

If I had to to it over from scratch I think I would get a 9.8 hp motor (smaller)
and use the Garelick 71090 bracket (less lift but lighter) although i like the high lift (no drag when heeled).

Here are a couple of photos of my OB bracket and mounting plate. The bracket is OMC. You'll notice there isn't a wedge hump on mine. I have seen at least one other 25 without the hump also.
The Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke was installed in 2002 by the previous PO so I do not know what was there out of the factory.
Be sure to get a bracket with enough lift to get the prop out of the water. The Garelick that Technodad used looks pretty good.
I think the reason the wedge humps are no longer needed is that newer brackets have a tilt feature for the mounting pad and OBs have a tilt/trim feature as well.
As for finding a bracket that uses the same mounting holes, that may be a problem. Most likely an original bracket was designed for a 2 stroke OB. 4 strokes are heavier and have more torque so those brackets seem to built wider.

Whatever mounting you use make sure the bracket mounting plate leans backwards about 5 degrees. Outboards are made to go on transoms that are leaning backwards like most dinghies.
I should have made my wedge block with more backwards angle and I eventually had to machine the bracket mounting plate tapered to make more angle. You can see it in the pic.

Check out Garhauer. They make a gorgeous stainless steel bracket with a MUCH easier to use lifting handle than the Garelick. Sage Marine is using it on their Sage 17 boats.

Most brackets allow the motor pad to be adjusted to allow for transom angles. Also, you could fab a custom pad to accommodate a reverse transom, as some have shown above.

My 192 came with a fiberglass wedge and Garelick mount attached. I'll keep it going as long as I can, otherwise I'll be cutting access holes to get at the mounting bolts, and I'm loathe to do that.
