We are about to put a Yamaha 8hp 4 stroke with power tilt on the back of our new Hunter 260 WB. We understand that it is pretty low on power even though it has reverse thrust however it is really only for getting in and out of the dock area. Several posts earlier mentioned the weight factor of out board motors and how some owners had experianced the mount brackets bending. The Yamaha weighs 38.5 kg and I was hoping that some of you could advise what size motors you have fitted, their weight and the consequence if any. Regards

On my 95 H26 the Honda 10hp 4 stroke was too much for the original motor mounts(mainly in reverse) so I had to raise it 3 inches and reinforce it with steel plates. (my mount was the flat wooden board bolted to the transom) What changes, if any, did you have to do with your mounts. Ray S/V Speedy

I can't help but I'm very interested in the answer. This winter we plan to move up to a new Honda 9.9 hp 4-stroke on our '96 26, which has the wood motor mount bolted to the transom. We called Hunter, initially to find out if the transom could handle a 15 hp (the answer was "people do it, but for the record, no"). We have since decided the 9.9 is more than enough. However, our question was related to thrust, not weight. The 9.9 weighs 40-50 pounds more than the 8 hp. Hunter did not comment on this (nor did we specifically ask). Why do you say the transom (or motor mount) couldn't handle it "especially in reverse?" What adverse effects did you see with the weight of the 10 hp? Thanks for your help, I'm trying not to make an expensive mistake.

I have a 2000 model Honda 9.9 with electric start and extra long shaft on my 23.5. I replaced the original teak (at least it looked like teak) board mount with one of 2" oak and bolted it with stainless steel bolts, nuts and large washers on the inside of the transom. It works great, never had any problems relating to strength of the mount.

We had a Yamaha 8 hp 2-stroke. Great motor, started great, pushed the boat very well, but...virtually impossible to get parts for. We never could figure out how to reach the manufacturer and they very poorly stocked their dealers (at least within a 200 mile radius of here). We finally taded in on a Johnson. Very accessable. We can probably get parts for this at the grocery store! Make sure before you buy that you can get the parts to service the motor. Good luck!

9.9 Honda on H26.
My Honda 4 stroke is an older model. It is a 1983 Honda 100 which is a 10 horse. The 9.9 is basically the same motor only newer. On my 95 H26 the motor could not be raised all the way up as the steering handle hit the cockpit floor in front of the ob opening. My motor mount was the solid wood mount bolted to the transom. The board was approx 9" tall, 16 to 18" wide and 2" thick. I added 2 1/2" of heigth by lag bolting a piece of pressure treated wood to the top of the existing mount and then installed a 1/4" thick steel strap 2" wide from the bottom of the original mount to the top of the new addition on each side. The strap and mount are bolted to the original mounting holes in the transom (with 1/4"longer SS bolts) and a new bolt and nut was added, along with a large flat washer, thru the new wood addition and strap at the top. Now the motor tips up all the way and the mount no longer flexes in reverse. Ray S/V Speedy

I have a Johnson 9.9 on my H-25, but it's mounted on a heavy duty West Marine spring mount. The heavier duty mount really makes a difference. In addition, I have a heavy duty engine hoist strap hooked to a block and tackle swaged to my backstay for those quick race lifts. Not too expensive but extremely effective. It seems to work fine ( more than enough thrust to get in and out of the jetty) however I believe that there is a need to strut the mount back to the side of the trasom box for there is a reasonable amount of flex in the bracket. Better to strut it now than wait for it to bend or break. This is the first 4 stroke we have used and I don't mind saying it is an oustanding motor, quite, efficent and with the reverse thrust excellent in reverse.

I changed out the original moter bracket with an adjustable model. When I through bolted it, I used a large 3/16 alum. plate on the inside. Seems to have plenty of support and plenty of power. (5hp to 15hp What a difference!)
