To enter my Oceanis 45 into a race between Chicago and Mackinaw Island (on Lake Michigan), I need an ORR rating. I tried to get this done last season, however the Oceanis 45 hull had never been measured.

I hear that there is a Charleston boat that was measured and rated. Anyone have info on that? My boat did get a PHRF rating, which is 90.

As you have found out, ORR is complex.

Your boat will probably have to be measured. The complexity of that can vary:

Easiest if another O45 already HAS an ORR cert, a so-called 'sistership'. Then your simplified measurement can be done quickly and while in the water. Depending on how 'competitive' the chief measurer thinks you'll be, they can waive the on-the-water part.

If no sistership, then if the designer can provide ORA compatible drawings of the boat, you will not have to be hauled. Happily I'm pretty sure Conq-Finot can/will do this; they have been very good to work with.

Lastly if they can/will not, she has to come out of the water for a full measurement. That costs more obviously. You can take heart that you are now the sistership of any other O45 that needs a cert! ;^)

My dealer is trying to get a CAD file from Beneteau for US Sailing. They need the file to see the full IGES surfaces of the hull, keel and rudder. If Beneteau sends that over - the first major milestone in getting an ORR rating will be done. If not - I'll stick to PHRF races.

Just to provide closure on this topic, I did in fact get an ORR Rating in time to race the Chicago to Mackinac race (Thank you to the guys at US Sailing). With the standard Neil Pryde sails (mast furled mail with vertical battens) and roller furled jib, the Off-Wind rating of the boat was 0.908.

Nice! How was your race?

Did USsailing need the drawings, or did they have sistership data?

They did need to get CAD drawings from Beneteau. There were no sister ships with the shoal keel option.

US Sailing was able to get the CAD drawings Beneteau. The only sister ship out there had the deep keel - while I have the shoal keel option.

I learned a lot about the boat in the process of preparing for the race. I made a lot of changes this year - and have an even longer list for next year's race. One change will be a new reaching chute or a Code Zero ... Since my 1.5 oz blew out when we were hit by strong gusts.
