the 1980 33' just was rubbed with oil, try rubbing boiled linseed oil in a test area if you are after a similar finish, i started to renew the rubbed oil finish but decided i wanted to varnish

I would suggest that you look at the product that was used on the next generation of Hunters. It was Daly's Seafin. It is an oil based product that dries to a semi gloss and is very durable.

I clean the interior woodwork with lemon oil and then apply a coat of tung oil and wipe off the excess after a couple of minutes - easy and lasts years.

Staining new teak to match existing teak color

I too needed to match the 30 year old Teak on my boat. I had to replace parts on cabinets and make an A/C cabinet under the nav table. I wanted all to match as close as possible.

I deal with stains on a daily basis as we refinish hardwood floors. I tried all my minwax and bonakemi colors and none came close. Finally I hit something called Australian Timber Oil made by Cabot I believe (Lowes,Homedepot). I used it on outdoor decks before. The color is Mahogany flame. It is a thin oil with a stain in it. You just rub it on and wipe off. It has a semi gloss luster when dry, very pleasant. Can be left as is or coated with gloss varnish if a higher gloss is required. Cheap and goes a long way. It was the best and closest match to my 30 year old bulkheads color.

I removed the Princess electric stove/oven and made a large storage cabinet under my new counter top stove for pots, pans and provisions. The doors I ordered were raw teak and looked green. After staining, they match all the other teak.
The A/C cabinet picture shows the unfinished teak and then the stained teak. It looks almost the same color as the desk top and the bulkhead. All were refreshed with the same product. Raw teak got two coats and old teak only one coat.
Hope this helps

Glad you found some ideas. The purpose of this site is to exchange ideas and help each other with our common favorite passtime.

Here are some sources:

Look at my web pages at www.hunter37.homestead.com
It is still a work in progress. Some pages are empty. Just check every once in a while as i am updating it as time permits. Hope you find ideas you can use. Questions are encouraged.

The stove you see I picked up on ebay for 100 box. It is a SUBURBAN stove used in RV's. Since then,i found a new old stock Kenyon with a flip up cover and have installed it.
It has pot holders and can be used at sea.

Cabinet doors came from Custom Teak Marine Woodwork. The shaker doors match the hunter doors pretty much. About 80 each. They have lots of doors.

After going through my site, feel free to email me if you want more info.

Wow, That is great! Did you use the Cabot on existing teak in the cabin? I need to clean mine up and have been debating different options .

Oxalic acid is used for bleaching wood. There may be a less toxic substance out there.

The original wood color on most of our boats was quite dark. Guidera has matched the orginal color with his Australian Timber Oil. Are you looking for a "light teak" color? That was not the way they came, but maybe you could bleach to that shade???

There is only so much you can do with the interior. After all, you are dealing with 30 year old plywood that has been subject to a lot of moisture through it,s lifetime. I did strip some solid teak parts with Olympic stain stripper. About 18box a gallon. You should see the crud and dark oils leaching from the solid wood. Aft drying and a light sanding, the teak looks like the day it was milled. HOWEVER, do not attemp to strip any plywood items. I.e. bulkheads, flat panel doors, etc. The plywood will separate and bubble in a heartbeat. I got carried away and had to repair the cabinet door under the kitchen sink as it's center panel delaminated after dipping. Razor blade slits in the bubbles, injecting glue and clamping did the trick but I did learn my lesson there.

Front cabin picture shows old doors re installed on new stained teak plywood and second picture shows new stained teak plywood added to cover the bottom of the bunks. Matches kitchen galley 30 year old teak plywood pretty close.

You can work with whats there and get things pretty close. You cannot make it look like the new light wood finishes in modern boats.

Jose, nice job on the cabin sole! As the sink cabinetry, steps over the engine, the nav desk and the aft cabin bulkheads are all installed after the sole, did you remove all these or just fit the new plywood around them?

I came up with the right mix with Minwax stains.
I have it written down at the shop but it's a mix of Gunstock and Red Oak.
I'll get back to you with my ratio.

Minwax:
4:1 gunstock - Red Oak.
