Original (!) Sea cock has failed

Hi all.My (original as far as I know) under-sink seacock (the type with a red "rosette" handle that rotates to open and close has failed (in closed position).
I closed the under sink tap/handle when ready to leave the boat today. I noticed that there seemed to be more friction than usual. Then I decided to wash my hands and tried to open the sea cock to drain the sink.
No good - the tap just rotates but the sink doesn't drain.
I'll replace the sea cock with a modern one when I lift out to get the antifouling done in January. I'll replace the other four too.
In the meantime, given that the seacock is locked closed, should I worry?
And is there anything I can *safely* do to persuade the tap to open? ( The boat is still on its finger berth.)

The original gate valves were the very first thing I replaced when doing the refit on Sunshine. They were all seized in open position. When I pulled them apart the rubber stoppers were long gone. Everything had corroded out a long time ago. The boat was floating on its own pluming. I replaced everything with Groco flanged type thru hull (bronze) with Groco gate valves. I feel much better now leaving the boat all year in the marina. From: "John.Kinsella John.Kinsella@... I expect that the ferrous handle has rotted away. If I recall correctly, there's a small screw that attaches the red handle to the square end of the stem (1/4" square I think). If you can remove the handle you might be able to get a socket or wrench to turn it. The seacock will be fine if it's closed.I replaced my original (V752) seacocks last season because there was a bit of weeping and corrosion. On reflection, I almost wish I'd just persevered to replace the handles as the bronze turned out to still be in great shape - but I didn't find that out until I'd bought new ones and ground the old ones out.Alisdair

John, If you haven't sunk you are probably good. Are you sure it is closed? You might try putting some flexible tubing down the drain hose to see if there is water in the hose. Lyric had the gate valves also and I had the one for the head fail. As I recall
it was a 1 1/4 inches but I thought it was a 1 1/2 inch and that was what I bought to replace it with. I elected to change it by careening on a low tide. I got the old one out and then the new one didn't fit with the tide starting to come back in. I made it
back to the chandlery, got the right size, fought traffic getting back to the boat and got it in with the water about 1 inch away from pouring into the hole! Doing it by careening is doable just make sure you have a helper, a large wrench, bedding compound
and the right size thru hull. for the sink.( Don't use 5200 for the bedding compound or you will never get it off again. I like Dolphinite) I believe it is 1 inch but I might be wrong. Looking into the thru hull from the outside you will see a couple of small
notches. Get a piece of flat stock slghtly wider than the inside of the hole, grind it down so that it will slip in and leave some stock to fit into the notches. Pretty hard to turn a wrench under the head. Use the wrench to hold the nut on the thru hull
and turn the thru hull from outside by turning the flat stock. Good luck and there is probably tons of you tube videos but I haven't looked. One other thing I did with the through hulls was put dual intakes for the engine. One on each side of the keel in case
one failed i could switch to the other. Having tapered plugs by each fitting is also a good plan. Walt

I'm in the process of replacing all mine with Groco flanged seacocks. The old ones were metric, so I have had the pleasure of re-drilling the holes to SAE sizes. I went substantially larger with the raw water intake.I'm glad "Tea Cup" was on a trailer for this job. If I were careening, I would need the tide to stay low for about a month and a half. :)

Trailer makes it nice, but where is the challenge and excitement?

Good point, Walt! I have a mental picture of you weaving madly through
traffic with one hand on the horn, dashing through the chandlery and
back to your imperiled vessel ... to the theme music of "Mission
Impossible". :)My way was exciting in its own way, though. Long story, but I very nearly burned my boat to the ground with the work light I was using. Boat was parked three feet from the house, so that would have gone up too.

OMG! Very scary, we lost a boat to fire. Fiber glass does not burn but the resin that holds it together burns like hellfire! Your mental picture was close but the tune was probably by Jimmy Buffet and I forget which one. From: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com on behalf of gene_neill@...
