Does anybody know if the original mainsail, made by Atlantic Sails for Hunter Marine are Nylon or Dacron? I have a 1973, H25 with the racing hull. I had a roof leak and left a nasty brown stain approximately 1ft x 1ft, and since the sail was folded, it went through 3 layers of sail. Bummer! Would like to clean it with a clorox solution, but can't if it's nylon. Any other suggestions are appreciated. It's going to be an early launch this year!!!

clorox

I have been advised never to use clorox on any sail by sailmakers......clorox will rot the cloth

Sail Stains

Your Mainsail is Dacron, Not Nylon. Nylon is used in Spinnakers and does not stand up to the sun as well as dacron. Depending on the make up of the stain, Dirt, rust Etc... There are certain houshold cleaning agents you can try. First start with a samll section. A dilution of bleach and water will not hurt the sail, it is plastic. However, too much clorine bleach may cause the sail to yellow a bit. Use plenty of watter to rinse, and do not use a stiff brush to scrub. Rather, a very soft brush or better yet a terry cloth towel. This will keep from abrading the finish of the fabric. If it is dirt, start with something Like Wisk laundry detergent. If it is a rust stain, try something like CLR, and water. TYlex can be tried on mildew stains. Whatever you use, Make sure to rinse thoroughly, and dry the sail before putting away. Good Luck.
