I found a set of frames for the original spray hood/dodger in my boat.
There was also the remains of the canvas, sans window.
How does one identify which frame goes forward and which one aft? My
canvas is so wrecked I can't tell.

Thanks!

Hi John

Easiest way is to get a new set of frames, not that expensive. Best to
replace with stainless tube rather than the supplied aluminium. Should pay
less than £100 for the frame.

As far as I know I have a stock setup. The frames are solid (I think)
and about 5/8" round, covered with vinyl. They mount on two pivots,
one on either side of the cabin. The rear lower part of the side
flaps are hooked to a couple of eyes on the side of the cockpit
combing with bungi cord. The lower part of the front is just a
boltrope stretched around the lip at the rear of the hatch 'garage'.

The whole setup is pretty flimsy, but has the advantage of being
easily collapsed when not needed. My only complaint so far is the
lack of support when moving back and forth between cockpit and side
deck.

I am also interested in this question, That is of moving back and
forth along the side deck. The aft supports for dodger on "Tern" are
secured to the top of the cockpit combing just aft of the cabin, and
near the outermost turn of the combing. This provides lateral support
but reduces the area needed for stepping onto the side deck. I am
thinking of moving the support to the inside of the combing or even
angling the support back to the cabin but have not had time to play
with this idea yet. Is the current location for the aft supports
normal or are other configurations being used? The dodger frame is
well made of stainless tubing. The original frame of aluminum tubing
was also with the boat when I bought her. I think the previous owner
made a wise choice in replacing it with stainless as the quality is
much better and it provides me a steady support when I want it. He
also added an additional handrail of tubing about 4 or 5 inches above,
but attached to, the aftmost support. This handrail is a godsend. But
to my original question. Where do most users attach the aftermost
dodger support without restricting the side deck?

Would you be interested in parting with your aluminium frame? I have
nothing here for a pattern to make a stainless setup. Colin...

Colin, I am sorry but the aluminum frame was flimsy and weak. I
removed what hardware might be of use someday and then discarded the
rest. I didn't have room to store it and was not thinking that it
might make a pattern for someone. If you think it would be of help I
could probably take some pictures and measurments of the new one and
send them to you. Let me know.
