Optimum location for fluxgate compass?

With all the specifications that Raymarine gives for locating the fluxgate compass for an autopilot I would be interested in where people have had success in locating there unit? I am not satisfied with the operation of my autopilot even though I have only a 5* deviation.

DON; I have a ODAY 28 1985 I installed my autohelm st 4000 myself I put the fluxgate compass on portside under the cushions storage compartments wall faceing starboard in center of the boat WHERE THERESNO METAL OBJECTES to give you a deviation I have 0 deviation on my installation If you still have a problem I would call Raymarine service at there 800 number I just checked my records and its 1 800 539 5539 thats in Nashua NH; I hope it works out for you FRED PIERCE ekleinert@yahoo.com

Away from metal and fields

The fluxgate for our st4000 on our O'Day 37 was initially installed under the galley sink on the centerline. Weird things would happen when somebody tossed a knife or cast iron pan into the sink and the deviation was barely within limts. I moved it to just behind the mast, still on the centerline, inside the spirit locker. Deviation is zero and nothing affects it.
