does any one know what the optimum heeling angle for hunter 376 is. that is what angle will give me the best speed and helm.

Hear say

glenn, I have heard that 20 degrees is the maximum efficiency. I think this may be a theoretical number not tested. After all............... good luck on your quest, Mike D p.s. I like more than 20 degrees. It may be slower but it's a lot more fun!

376 heel

A friend who races a 376 extensively reefs to avoid heeling much over 15 degrees. I reached my maximum one time speed at close to 25 degrees heel but probably would have gone faster reefed with less heel.

Couldn't help but respond. Keep the boat as flat as posssible. That's what I have heard. These boats have the "slippery hulls" and don't need any more heel than you have to. BVI in 2/01.

It depends...

...on your keel configuration and on sea states. Probably somewhere around 17-18 degrees on most of these boats. If you find that you're going faster once you reef, then you were heeled too much. Don't just pay attention to your inclinometer, though, look at your wheel. The kingspoke should be marked so you can see how much weather helm you've got going. You want it to be somewhere right between a little and a lot. If the wheel is hard over, the boat is not going as fast as it could be. When that rudder gets sideways it becomes a brake.

Ease the Traveler

One way to find out if you will go faster is to ease the traveler. What I find is that I can pickup up to 1/2 a knot by easing the main. If the wind picks up and remains constant, this lets me know it is time to reef. In gusty conditions this lets me pickup speed for the duration of the gust without putting the rail in the water. Heel Angle

I've read that the boat was designed with 15 degrees in mind as the optimum heel angle. On the other hand I've reached/maintained hull speed and more on my 376 with more heel than that. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have been able to do the same with the main reefed. S/V Marconi Won
