With summer coming I've been looking at ways to keep the boat cooler. Somebody suggested a boom tent or awning. It looks like it would help. I guess the lighter colors would reflect more? Any opinions on these?
Thanks,

Made one

My wife and I made one for our boat. We used white rip stop nylon and fiberglass tent pole from Gander Mountain. We measured and bought enough nylon then, she sewed it together and put pockets in each end along the width of the material that would be perpendicular to the Beam and one on the center. I cut the poles longer than the width so they would bow to make an arc. I put grommets on the edges and secured it over the boom and to the life lines. It works very nice.

You can also buy one already made. It just costs a bit more.

I liked the Weathermax material - at least so far...

Your choices might be strongly influenced by the Material you want, whether you want to make it yourself or not, or can adapt a truck-type tent or so.... (I have seen some very clever designs...

I went with Lee Sail Covers (leesailcovers.com/_wsn/page4.html). The material choice mattered to me - and I want to add mosquito netting on top - at times...

On our 28.5 We have used a light blue 6x8 rip stop nylon dining fly- got it at a camping store.
Just tie a string from the front center to the mast and aft to boom end. Use bunges at the corners to attached to mast stays and aft pulpit rails- cheap solution, looks nice, works and stores easy.
