Opening Life Lines

We are looking at modifying our life lines so we can take them down between the last post and the railing at the back of the boat. We do not want to just unhook them and let them go limp because we often have children on the boat. Here is the question! Does anyone know of a company that makes a brace that will go off the post at a 45 degree (or any angle) that can be used to support the forward pull. I saw such a brace that was anchered to the deck and had a set screw to keep it tight on the post but, the boat owner said it was on the boat when he bought it. I know I can have some thing fabricated but that will probably take a bit of time in Mexico. Russ Garecht Her Diamond Ring San Carlos, Son. Mexico

We did it.

Russ: We did this. Our life lines run from the bow pulpit to the last stanchion where we placed an eye. We then have the open portion of the life line attached to the stern pulpit and the pelican hook opens at the eye. We attach the loose opening portion (gate) to a line that is attached to the back stay. I can take a picture of this and e-mail it to you if you would like to see it. The reason that we did this was to prevent the lines from being slack when we "jump off the boat" when we come into a dock and need to fend off. Steve Dion

Steve...

i would really like to see how you did this. I have been trying to do the same thing to my H31. I want an eye on the aft side of the last stanchion, permanently attach the lifeline to that eye, and use the clasp end on the stern rail as it is used now. Is this how you did it? Would love to see your pictures, email to dcdon@hotmail.com. I'll get them from there. thanks.

Slacker lines

This is just a cheap easy fix. The full brace would be better but here it is.. put a small locking collar on the life line just past the last post (not the stern rail), Then when you release the life line, they stay taunt forward of the stanchion.

Life Line Stoppers

Defender Industries make an item called a "Life Line Stopper". It's a small S/S donut that you thread onto the lifeline (remove the pelican hook) and butt it up against the last stanchion. It holds with a set screw and keeps the lines from going slack when the pelican hook is unhooked. I used these before I had new lifelines installed. Just be sure that you measure the THICKEST diameter of the lifeline. This area will most likely be the nicro press end of the lifeline where the pelican hook threads on. The new life line I had installed has a link butted against the stanchion to accomplish the same thing and allows the line to drop. See www.defenderindustries.com

Support Brackets

I beleive you can get support brackets from either Edson or Schaeffer. Both are located in New Bedford, MA. Call them for catalogs.

Lifeline Slack

I used small cable clamps just aft of the last post. Got four of them at ace hardware for less than a buck (galvanized not SS) and installed them on both sides of the boat on each line. You really dont even notice them, and it's CHEAP! (I mean inexpensive)
