Here is the photo of the remainder of the old centerboard. Only the head remained. There was no damage to the trunk when the centerboard snapped. In fact, we never even knew it happened. Turns out this was a common tale among the owners of the Mark I model. The boat sailed fine before and after. I may have noticed the boat did not point quite as high, but we broke it late in the season I think, so we did not have many chances to notice. We never found the old board.
Chesapeake Light Craft manufactures an excellent replacement of spruce. They over-drill and fill all the necessary holes, so you can drill the final holes through epoxy only. Hopefully, no wood will be exposed.
Performance Cruising even has a Youtube instruction video for replacing the centerboard. Sure wish they had paid for the new one! Of course they are long defunct.
I think this board is made of layers of Luan Plywood! I do not see any significant amount of epoxy inside or out. I think they get soaked and eventually rot.
Here is the new one: it is spruce, epoxied, and coated in graphite.
Here is a video of the new one.
