Now that's crazy! Just not sure which activity in those conditions is crazier.
We do enjoy kayaking in thin ice. Kinda neat to be a human powered ice breaker. Plus the ice makes a nice place to sit your beverage when you stop to take a break LOL.

Man, I spent A LOT of time in cold water, properly suited up and supported and that just looks like a hypothermic tragedy in the making. Cold water kills, quickly.

They've got dry suits on, and a chase boat is in the water close by. Not their first rodeo. ;^)

College racing is a spring sport, and the Big10 racing starts in April. The U of MN team spends spring break at Fort Walton YC training, and has its first meets before it can train at home. Last weekend this was Iowa, where they won both the A and B fleets. Go Gophers!

We have prop driven water circulators to protect the docks. In mid April we turn them lakeward to clear an area for the team to practice, it usually ends up being about as big as a football field. The ice where the fishermen are is probably over a foot thick. But it's starting to rot, which is the issue they have to watch.

Minnesotans and their ice. I remember back when I was a over the road trucker seeing cars parked out on a lakes near the freeway with a big sign advertising the "Car Sink". Apparently they park an old beater on the ice an have a raffle to see who can most closely predict when it will go down!

That’s the smallest icebreaker I’ve ever seen.
Amen. The WCSC has over 40 470s (that one is #31, at least for the day!) and keeping them all in level racing condition is a full time job. The last thing they want is divots in the hull.

That is absolutely awesome. Two of my favorite hobbies. Sadly the ice here in central Ohio doesn't get thick enough every winter for ice fishing. Thanks for sharing, JD!

JD, you have all the cool toys up north. They let the ice freeze around our docks and just hope it doesn't damage them too badly.
