We have an onion smell that seems to be coming from the waste holding tank on our boat. We have checked the vent and there does not seem to be a blockage there, and the tank is pretty much empty. There is not any smell in the head itself just the area of the tank. Any help will be appreciated.

Two questions--

Is the odor inside the boat around the tank, or out the tank vent? If out the tank vent, what if anything are you using in the tank?

Coming from the area around the tank

The smell doesn't seem to come from the vent. It is the strongest when we open the hatch cover where the tank is located. There is also a faint smell in the aft berth corner. (which is directly behind the bulkhead wall separating the compartments) We have looked to see if there seems to be any leaking but have not seen anything. It is not an overwhelming smell but but still noticable. We have used the clean potties that you recommended in your book and also have done the vinegar thing. In reviewing the book I see that you recommend the K.O holding tank treatment. We have only flushed with water. Do you think that might do the trick? Thanks for the help.
